Celebrating a Lifelong Dedication to St Helens Football Club
It is with great pride and honour that we recognise the exceptional contributions of
Tommy to the St Helens Football Club and the broader Fingal District Football
Association. Tommy’s illustrious playing career is the embodiment of dedication, skill,
and sportsmanship, and his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
Tommy’s passion for football was ignited during his formative years at St Helens
Area School, nurtured under the guidance of coach Donny Smith. Smithy, as he was
affectionately known, was a strict disciplinarian and a devoted mentor who instilled in
his players the importance of commitment and professionalism, often reminding
them, “Whether you are a good footballer or not, you can at least turn up and look
like one.” This early influence laid the foundation for Tommy’s stellar football journey.
At just 13 years of age, in 1955, Tommy joined the St Helens FC Reserves, quickly
distinguishing himself with his dedication and talent. By 1958, he was playing in his
first premiership team, marking the beginning of a remarkable senior career. In 1960,
Tommy advanced to the senior side, coinciding with a premiership win under coach
Diggles Fox. A decade later, Tommy served as vice-captain to coach Stephen Salter,
contributing to yet another premiership triumph in 1970.
Renowned for donning the iconic number 4, Tommy was a standout presence at both
club and league levels. His dominance in the centre, exceptional ball skills, and
tireless work rate were hallmarks of his play. Accumulating possessions seemingly at
will, Tommy’s mastery of the game earned him widespread acclaim.

and passion for the game set a standard rarely matched, and his contributions have
forever enriched the fabric of the club and the league.
We are honoured to induct Tommy into the Hall of Fame, in recognition of his
outstanding achievements and unwavering commitment to the sport. Tommy’s career
serves as a beacon of excellence for future generations, and his name will be
remembered with great respect and admiration.
